The tassel loafer is a classic style of shoe that has been popular for decades. It originated in the United States in the 1950s and quickly gained popularity among Ivy League students and young professionals.

The tassel loafer was initially designed by the shoemaker Alden Shoe Company in Massachusetts. It was inspired by traditional Norwegian shoes known as "Aurland moccasins" or "penny loafers," which had a slip-on design with a strap across the front. The tassel loafer took this basic design and added decorative tassels to the front, giving it a distinctive look.

The tassel loafer became associated with the preppy style and was embraced by college students and professionals who wanted a comfortable yet sophisticated shoe option. It was particularly popular among Ivy League students, who wore them with their classic button-down shirts, khaki pants, and blazers. MEN'S WIDTH FITTINGS
Most Tricker's men's shoes and boots are a Tricker's Width Fit 5. These are suitable for most men, as they are a standard width. In the UK this standard width is also known as an F fitting; in the USA it is known as a D fitting; in other parts of the world, it is known as an M (medium) or R (regular) fitting. Examples of Fit 5 styles include our iconic Stow country boot, Bourton country shoe and Robert town shoe collections.

Some of our styles are a Tricker's Width Fit 6. These shoes are suitable for wider feet. In the UK this wider fit is known as a G fitting; in the USA it is known as an E fitting; in other parts of the world, it is known as a W (wide) fitting. If a shoe or boot is a Tricker’s Width Fit 6 it will be labelled as such in the product details. Examples of Fit 6 styles include a Malton country boot and a Keswick country shoe.

Men's Shoe Tree Size Guide

If your footwear size lands on a half size then is it important to size down. For example, if your Tricker's are a size 9.5 then you should size down your shoe tree to a size 9.

Please bear in mind, our 4444 last runs large. If you have a size 8.5 on the 4444 last then you can use a size 9 shoe tree. If you are a size 9 on the 4444 last then you must use a size 9 shoe tree. If you are size 9.5 on the 4444 last then you can use a size 10 shoe tree.

SHOE KNOWLEDGE

Loafer

The loafer style dates back to Norway in the early 1930s. Taking inspiration from the moccasin shoes worn by native Americans in North America, and the simple slip-ons on the feet of Norwegian fishermen, the first design was born.

Popularity grew and export orders were sent across Europe and America. Esquire magazine even featured an article with photographs of Norwegian farmers wearing the shoe in cattle loafing sheds.

Soon after, the Spaulding family of New Hampshire, USA, began manufacturing a similar shoe, called the Loafer. This name later became a generic term used to describe a slip-on, moccasin shoe.

In 1934, G. H. Bass made his first version of the loafer which he called Weejuns. This appears to be a play on words on the origin of the original designer. A distinctive feature of this new design was a strip of leather stitched across the saddle of the shoe, featuring a shaped cutout.

In 1950s America before trainers were invented, the Weejun became the shoe of choice for young men and students. It became fashionable to keep a dime in the half moon cut out slot of the leather strip. This eventually gave the shoes their colloquial name of Penny Loafer, which is still used today.

LAST NO: 11659

This last has been developed for our Loafer collection and features are rounder toe shape. The size (length fitting) of Tricker’s footwear made on this last (11659) is true to size, we recommend sticking to your regular UK Size. If you are unsure of your UK size, use our size guide to convert your known size to a UK size.

The last is a hard, three-dimensional form on which the shoe is constructed. Depending on the style of shoe we use different lasts, this is what dictates the overall shape, proportion, fit and character of the shoe.

Bookbinder

The high shine rub off Bookbinder effect is a coated treatment applied to the leather. Apart from the black, all colours have a darker top and then a lighter shade on the base. During our shoeroom method, we cut back this darker top to bring the lighter shade to the surface giving a two-tone effect. This is created when polished on the mops in our Northampton factory Shoe Room giving the footwear a lustre and gleaming finish indicative of 1930s dress shoes.

Bookbinder is a Corrected Grain. At Tricker's, we source the finest corrected grain leather on the market. The break of corrected leathers is never as natural as with full grain. This break can be made worse across the vamps with ill fitting shoes. The best course of action a customer can take to look after their Bookbinder leather is to purchase shoe trees to keep the shoe in shape and polish regularly to keep the leather nurtured.

Be careful with the aftercare for these shoes. Do not use a renovator as it will strip out the high shine. Sometimes all you need to do is rub these shoes with a clean cloth and they will be beautiful. Less is more with this type of leather.
