Leather Boots: How to Prepare Your Boots for Autumn

As the seasons change, so do the demands on your footwear. After months of warmer, drier weather, autumn brings cooler days, damp mornings and the first signs of mud underfoot. It’s the perfect time to give your leather boots the attention they deserve,  ensuring they look their best and perform beautifully through the season ahead.

Here’s how to get your boots ready for autumn.

Why Autumn Care Matters

Autumn can be tough on leather. Increased moisture, falling temperatures and muddy terrain all take their toll on untreated boots. Giving them some pre-season care helps maintain their strength, suppleness and finish,  protecting the investment you’ve made in high-quality footwear.

A few simple steps now can prevent issues like drying, cracking and water damage later in the season.

  1. Clean Thoroughly

Start by brushing away any dust or dirt collected over summer. A soft brush or slightly damp cloth will do the trick.

If your boots haven’t been worn for a while, use a quality leather cleaner to lift out built-up grime and restore the surface. Clean leather is essential before conditioning or polishing — otherwise, dirt can become trapped and dull the finish.

  1. Polish and Protect

Once cleaned, apply a polish in a matching shade or a neutral tone to restore depth and colour. This step enhances the appearance while also adding a layer of protection.

For added defence against autumn rain, finish with a wax polish or weather-resistant treatment. This will help repel water and mud without compromising the natural breathability of the leather.

If your boots are suede, use a soft brush to raise the nap and apply a dedicated protective spray suited to wetter conditions.

  1. Check Soles and Laces

Autumn often means slippery pavements and muddy paths so grip matters. Check the soles for signs of wear and ensure they’re still ready to take on wet ground.

Swap out worn or faded laces for a new pair. It’s a small change that instantly refreshes your boots’ overall look.

  1. Store Properly

Between wears, keep your boots in a cool, dry space away from direct heat or damp. Use wooden shoe trees to help maintain their shape and absorb any residual moisture.

When not in use for longer periods, store them in cloth shoe bags to protect from dust and scuffs.
