A derby shoe is characterised by open lacing, which means that the eyelets for the shoelaces are sewn on top of the vamp (the upper part of the boot).

This type of lacing allows the boot to be adjusted for a comfortable fit and makes it easier to put on and take off than a boot with closed lacing, such as an Oxford.
