Shoe Knowledge

The Loafer

The loafer traces its roots to 1930s Norway, drawing on Native American moccasins and the slip-on shoes worn by Norwegian fishermen. As it spread across Europe and the US, it gained wider attention, even appearing in Esquire.

In America, the Spaulding family popularised the name “loafer,” before G.H. Bass introduced the Weejun in 1934, defined by its now-iconic leather saddle and cut-out detail. By the 1950s, it had become a staple, with the habit of placing a dime in the saddle giving rise to the name Penny Loafer.

Today, Tricker’s interprets this classic through the same Northamptonshire making that defines its boots and shoes, bringing a more robust, long-wearing character to a traditionally lightweight style.

LAST NO: W2298

This last has been used for decades. It is part of our history and character as England's oldest shoe manufacturer. The size (length fitting) of Tricker’s footwear made on this last (W2298) is true to size, we recommend sticking to your regular UK Size. If you are unsure of your UK size, use our size guide to convert your known size to a UK size.

Calf Leather

Calf leather is finer grained, and lighter in weight than the hide of older cattle. This means that it is also more supple. It is also very durable in comparison to its thickness.

Reviews

I wanted the Eva Penny

"I wanted the Eva Penny loafers with a rubber sole (Espresso Burnished), and they are perfect—really comfortable to wear. I also have the same model with a single leather sole (Green Cutter), and I can definitely recommend them as well. For me, the model fits very well (size 5)."

Nice Loafers

"These are well made loafers, the usual Trickers quality but unfortunately they are too big for me and had to be returned. I can wear a 3UK boot but cannot wear a 3UK shoe, especially a slip on shoe like a loafer."

Gretchen C. (5/5)

Comfortable and trendy

"The Espresso Burnished Eva Penny Loafer looks good and of great quality, really comfortable to wear out of the box. Wish that more colors and styles of lady loafers will be made available in rubber sole."

Chloe (5/5)

Had to return

"Really beautiful shoes, left one didn’t fit well. Had to return. My Olivvia brown boots however are perfect."
