The James Loafer is a refined penny loafer silhouette, distinguished by its neat apron stitching, hand-stitched beefroll detailing, and classic saddle strap across the vamp. Built on our W2298 last, it offers an elegant, streamlined shape tailored specifically for slip-on footwear, providing a secure fit across the instep and a snug heel hold to prevent slipping while maintaining a sleek profile on the foot.

This version is presented in Coffee Burnished Leather, a premium calf hide carefully finished by hand to create deep, multi-tonal character across the shoe. The burnishing technique enhances the rich chestnut and espresso tones along the apron, seams and toe, giving the leather a sophisticated warmth that pairs effortlessly with tailored trousers, sharp chinos or classic denim.

Each pair of James loafers is handmade in our Northampton factory in England by skilled craftspeople using traditional methods, and to the same exacting standards that first established our reputation. Built with Goodyear welted construction and set on a channelled leather flex sole, the James provides a remarkably smooth underfoot feel, immediate flexibility and superior comfort alongside a beautifully clean, classic underside finish.

Shoe Knowledge

The Loafer

The loafer traces its roots to 1930s Norway, drawing on Native American moccasins and the slip-on shoes worn by Norwegian fishermen. As it spread across Europe and the US, it gained wider attention, even appearing in Esquire.

In America, the Spaulding family popularised the name “loafer,” before G.H. Bass introduced the Weejun in 1934, defined by its now-iconic leather saddle and cut-out detail. By the 1950s, it had become a staple, with the habit of placing a dime in the saddle giving rise to the name Penny Loafer.

Today, Tricker’s interprets this classic through the same Northamptonshire making that defines its boots and shoes, bringing a more robust, long-wearing character to a traditionally lightweight style.
