The Silhouette: Tonal Sophistication Built on the W2298 last, the James features a streamlined, city-appropriate profile that offers a secure and tailored fit through the waist and heel. The design is elevated by its hand-stitched apron and a unique split-toe detail, giving the shoe an architectural character that excels in both smart and casual settings. In Navy, the shoe takes on a midnight depth that pairs seamlessly with grey tailoring or raw denim.

Castorino Suede: Lightweight Luxury Castorino is a premium full-grain reverse suede, prized for its exceptional handle and natural durability.

  • Velvet-Like Nap: It features a very fine, short nap that absorbs light to create a rich, matte Navy hue.

  • Reverse Suede Integrity: Because the full grain of the leather remains intact on the interior, the upper is more breathable and resilient than standard split-suede alternatives.

  • Immediate Comfort: The supple nature of the Castorino hide allows the shoe to adapt quickly to the wearer's foot, ensuring a comfortable break-in period.

Technical Build: The Vi-Lite Foundation To evolve the James for modern city life, we have utilised a high-performance sole unit.

  • Vibram Vi-Lite Sole: This edition is grounded by a Vibram Vi-Lite sole, an expanded rubber compound that provides the rugged look of a heavy tread with a "featherweight" feel.

  • Shock Absorption: The Vi-Lite material is engineered for superior cushioning and traction, making it ideal for navigating city pavements over long periods.

  • Goodyear Welted: Fully Goodyear welted in our Northampton factory, ensuring a watertight bond and a shoe that is built to be resoled for decades.

Shoe Knowledge

The Loafer

The loafer traces its roots to 1930s Norway, drawing on Native American moccasins and the slip-on shoes worn by Norwegian fishermen. As it spread across Europe and the US, it gained wider attention, even appearing in Esquire.

In America, the Spaulding family popularised the name “loafer,” before G.H. Bass introduced the Weejun in 1934, defined by its now-iconic leather saddle and cut-out detail. By the 1950s, it had become a staple, with the habit of placing a dime in the saddle giving rise to the name Penny Loafer.

Today, Tricker’s interprets this classic through the same Northamptonshire making that defines its boots and shoes, bringing a more robust, long-wearing character to a traditionally lightweight style.

LAST NO: W2298

This last has been used for decades. It is part of our history and character as England's oldest shoe manufacturer. The size (length fitting) of Tricker’s footwear made on this last (W2298) is true to size, we recommend sticking to your regular UK Size. If you are unsure of your UK size, use our size guide to convert your known size to a UK size.

Repello Suede

Repello Suede, a fine nap suede made from calfskin. The hide is split and aniline-dyed to create a velvety effect on both sides of the leather. The repello suede used in Tricker’s footwear is high quality, tanned to give a full, generous handle and rich appearance.

Fully treated with ‘Scotch Guard’ in the tannage, to achieve a high degree of resistance to staining in general. The proofing remains effective throughout the life of the footwear.

We advise using a suede brush to help with the aftercare for these shoes.
